The Kermadec Sanctuary initiative is a major and vital project, and its message needed art on a major scale – leading Pacific-NZ artist Fatu Feu’u joined the call to create the vital ocean haven, creating the vast painting Ola to anchor his new exhibition Sekia – Salute to the Kermadecs.
The painting is complemented by a series of powerful works on paper featuring a motif expressing tapui – protection of something of great significance – adapting a traditional icon of three stacked crosses within squares. His Sekia series evolved in both scale and intensity of colour to the final Tapui works, each unique, handpainted over woodcut.
